Ammonites are extinct marine creatures. They are closely related to crustacean species such as the Nautilus species. Ammonites appeared during the Devonian period and disappeared during the Cretaceous period.

Ammonites are excellent index fossils, available in spiral and non-spiral forms.

The largest ammonite fossil ever found was 1.8 meters in diameter, but the living chamber was missing. It was found in 1895 near Westphalia, Germany.
